Colorimetry

Do you find you can only read in short spells? Do you wake up with sore eyes or headaches? Do you see words running into each other?

We are one of the few practices in Northern Ireland to offer Colorimetry to combat visual stress. Visual stress is a term used to describe reading difficulties, light sensitivity and headaches from exposure to disturbing visual patterns.

What is colorimetry?

Scientific research has shown that the symptoms of visual stress can be alleviated using colour. Many people who have reading difficulties are often unaware that they see the page differently from others until someone applies an appropriate coloured overlay, or prescribed precision tinted lenses. Then they often exclaim how words stop moving and how the page appears still.

Symptoms

Symptoms of visual stress may include:

  • Movement or blurring of print
  • Words running into each other
  • Rapid tiring when reading
  • Sore eyes or eye strain
  • Headaches/migraines especially with computer use

Consequently accurate diagnosis and grading of its severity is important in developing an effective treatment plan.

Diagnosis

Holley Optometrists uses a highly sophisticated instrument, the Intuitive Colorimeter, to identify the precise colour that can make maximal difference in reducing visual stress to make reading easier. Colorimetry can also be extremely useful to patients with conditions such as dyslexia, autism, ADHD, brain injuries, photosensitive epilepsy and photosensitive migraine.
